Little Tom Mountain is a 73 acres (29.5 hectare ) nature reserve created around the same name, 632 ft (192.6 m ) high mountain near Holyoke in the state of Massachusetts in the United States , which is managed by The Trustees of reservations is managed.
Protected area
The reserve, located directly on the Connecticut River , is part of a contiguous area totaling 2,500 acres (10.1 km² ), which is a protected landscape and is home to rare animal and plant species - especially reptiles and amphibians - and at the same time represents a recreational area for the cities in the area. In the immediate vicinity are the Dinosaur Footprints sanctuary , which is also managed by the trustees, and the Mount Tom State Reservation , managed by the Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) , through which the Metacomet Monadnock hiking trail leads.
In 2002, a community made up of the Trustees of Reservations, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service , the DCR, and the Holyoke-based branch of the Boys & Girls Club of America acquired 396 acres (1.6 km²) on the eastern flank of the Mount Tom to protect the former ski area located there. As part of the community management following the acquisition, the area was divided among the partners, creating the Little Tom Mountain Sanctuary.
On May 18, 2013, a new 2 mi (3.2 km ) hiking trail was inaugurated that connects the sanctuary with neighboring Mount Tom State Reservation .
