Livathos ( Greek Λειβαθός often also Livathó Λειβαθό ( f. Sg. )), Official full form: Δήμος Λειβαθούς, formerly Italian Liváto , was from 1997 to 2010 a community in the valley of the same name on Kefalonia . It was located south-east of Argostoli and in 2010 became part of the newly created municipality of Kefalonia , in which it has since formed a municipality with 11 local communities.

Although it has always been a very fertile valley with good soil, the inhabitants turned to shipping; almost all shipowners on the island come from there. In Metaxata, Lord Byron prepared for his participation in the Greek struggle for freedom and wrote his work "Don Juan" here. The mansion Byron lived in did not survive the earthquake. In 1866 the valley had 2000 inhabitants. It is the only part of the island that has more inhabitants today than in the 19th century. Of the 25 localities, the best known is the village of Kourkoumelata, which was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1953 by the shipowner Andreas Vergotis for $ 15 million. The monastery church, built in 1600, was also rebuilt.

The port of Pessada, from where the ferry to Zakynthos leaves, is of major transport importance .

Attractions

The fortress of Agios Georgios

In the northern part of the municipality, bordering Argostoli, are the fortress and the village of Agios Georgios. The citadel ("Borgo") was the seat of the Count Palatine of Kefalonia from 1262 onwards . The Turks later holed up in the fortress, and in 1499 the Venetians (supported by Spanish troops) conquered the fortress after a two-month siege and ended the brief Turkish rule. The renaissance church Evangelistria is located on the road to the citadel.

The lush vegetation of the village of Lourdata can be explored via a designated hiking trail run by the Archipelagos Association. The circular route begins at the Platia, the village square, and takes about two and a half hours.
