Lloyd Passage
The Lloyd-Passage is a shopping arcade in downtown Bremen . It was built at the end of the 1980s on the public roads Große Hundestraße and Kreyenstraße and is considered the first covered public street in Germany. The Lloyd-Passage runs parallel to Obernstrasse and connects Sögestrasse with the Hanseatenhof .
The name of the 250-meter-long passage is reminiscent of the North German Lloyd . Its headquarters, the Lloyd building , stood where the Galeria Kaufhof building stands today.
history
The Lloyd-Passage goes back to an initiative in 1984 to create a roof for what was then the Horten department store (now Galeria Kaufhof). After the management of the Karstadt department store, located between Obernstrasse and Große Hundestrasse, expressed interest in the idea, planning began for a shopping arcade that would include the entire street and Kreyenstrasse. The aim was to upgrade Bremen city center as a regional center and shopping city.
Construction of the passage began on December 18, 1987. Almost two years later, on November 20, 1989, the topping-out ceremony was celebrated. The passage opened on April 30, 1990. The passage was financed entirely from private funds. The construction costs amounted to approx. DM 11.5 million (approx. EUR 5.88 million).
In 2000, heliostats were installed above the glass roof of the Lloyd-Passage , thus directing daylight into the passage.
Mall of Fame
In 2003 the “ Mall of Fame ” was opened in the Lloyd-Passage, in which the handprints of celebrities who have a connection to Bremen are embedded in a bronze plate in the floor of the passage.
