Kadri Ecvet Tezcan (* 1949 in Istanbul ) is a Turkish diplomat .

life and career

Tezcan began working in the Turkish diplomatic service in 1973 and had his first foreign assignment from 1976 in Warsaw . He then worked in various posts in Turkey. Further stations in his career were as consul general of Turkey in Hamburg and Hungary . Between 1998 and 2001, Tezcan worked as an ambassador at the Baku embassy and from February 1, 2005 to March 15, 2008 at the Warsaw embassy . From November 2009 to November 2011 he headed the Embassy in Vienna . Since the beginning of 2012 he has been permanent representative at the OECD in Paris.

In his career so far, he had called for tolerance. In an interview with the Austrian newspaper Die Presse on November 9, 2010, he expressed himself in an unusually sharp and completely unusual way for a diplomat against the Austrian policy on foreigners. These statements were perceived in Austria as a diplomatic scandal.

He advised Interior Minister Maria Fekter , who had been criticized nationwide for her deportation policy in the previous weeks, that she “should stop intervening in the integration process”. His statement is also quoted: “If I were the Secretary General of the UN , the OSCE or OPEC , I would not stay here. If you don't want foreigners, chase them away. There are many countries in the world where foreigners are welcome. You have to learn to live with others. ”These statements met with sharp criticism in Austrian politics, and Tezcan was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Alexander Van der Bellen , foreign policy spokesman for the Greens , defended Tezcan because he had "put his finger on many sore points in dealing with people of Turkish or Turkish origin".
