New York: November is the title of an Austrian feature film by Gerhard Fillei and Joachim Krenn from 2009. The independent film, located somewhere between thriller and film noir , was originally published under the title South .

action

1999, a few days before Thanksgiving . After a dramatically failed robbery on a bank in Los Angeles , Bruce McGray is at the lowest point of his life. Hunted by the FBI and seriously injured, he flees north to Oregon and from there to New York that same night. He longs to leave everything behind and start a new life. Perhaps even in that place in South America that a young, unknown woman describes so vividly in her diary: an abandoned orange farm on the coast of Colombia .

Bruce received this book in the mail a few days earlier. Maria from Del Rio sent it to him. The two had a difficult relationship ten years ago that Bruce ended abruptly one day. He wonders how Maria was able to find him after so many years and why she was sending him the diary of an unknown woman. The records describe her time on the abandoned orange farm, 15 miles southwest of Cartagena , and her arduous journey across Central America back to Alabama .

When Bruce encounters some disturbing content in the book that seems strangely familiar to him, he suspects that something connects him with this mysterious young woman.

Late at night, still absorbed in the book, he witnessed a harrowing incident. Overwhelmed and unable to help, Bruce is haunted by a deluge of fragmentary and grim memories. He now fears that the bond he believes he feels to the book and the young woman may go much deeper than he suspects.

That night he escapes from his apartment. When he can finally reach Maria the following evening, he learns very little, but all the more disturbing things about himself. With the federal authorities and finally the New York police on his heels, a desperate search begins for him his true identity.

music

The starting point of the film music by Sascha Selke (who also plays the piano parts in the soundtrack) is a piano suite created in 2002, which already contains the main themes of the orchestral film score. The classical string orchestra and brass were recorded in the renowned Shaw Studios in Hong Kong with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, while the woodwind parts were recorded in Singapore at the same time .

background

The film was shot mostly in Austria and the United States . In Austria, Aich im Jauntal and Villach became the film location, in the USA New York City . Some scenes were shot in Fusine in Valromana on the Italian border with Austria.

Awards

At the 2010 awards ceremony, the Diagonale film festival named the film the winner in the category "Best Artistic Montage Feature Film 2009/2010".

Reviews

"Blood is dripping, the bank robber's flight begins: With" South ", Joachim Krenn and Gerhard Fillei have succeeded in creating an atmospherically dense genre film in sound and image. Shaky images, closest possible proximity, highest black and white aesthetics. Impressive and exciting. "

- Julia Schafferhofer : Kleine Zeitung in the edition of March 21, 2010

“In Los Angeles, a bank robbery fails and ends in blood. Only one of the perpetrators, Bruce McGray, escapes injured and escapes to New York. But the noose of the investigators is tightening. Fillei and Krenn kidnap the audience into deep abysses. Dark mood and impressive images, plus deep glimpses into the souls of the multi-layered characters that captivate the viewer. In addition to the story of the attack, the characters' constant search for their own path is of particular interest. Great actors, great story. A film that will be remembered. "

- Ulrich Monzel : Saartext in the edition of January 25, 2010

“From an aesthetic point of view, the artistically intricate New York film noir" South "by Gerhard Fillei and Joachim Krenn stood out from the program. For more than 12 years, the two Austrian filmmakers have always worked on the project on the verge of private bankruptcy without university funding and their cinematic enthusiasm is reflected in every attitude. A similar visual brilliance has not been seen in a debut for a long time. The fact that this film went empty-handed at the award ceremony is actually a scandal, but it also shows that this year's festival year was well stocked with powerful films. "

- Martin Schwickert : Der Tagesspiegel in the edition of January 26, 2010

"South is also less convincing than a homogeneous film - it contains too many jumps and redundancies for that - because scene by scene: it happens again and again that the black and white images are sufficient here as an expression of a state, a feeling."

- Dominik Kamalzadeh : The standard in the edition of 16./17. March 2010
