LoRo ship
The LoRo ship , or Ro / Lo-Schiff (from the English L ift o n / off / R oll o n / off) is a very flexible type of vessel for the simultaneous transport of containers , piece goods , as well as RoRo - and other rolling or bulky Charges. The Lo / Ro type is therefore particularly suitable for services with mixed cargo volumes of containers, general cargo, long and bulk goods and heavy, rolling and bulky cargo in regions that do not allow the use of container ships of the same size or RoRo ships, as well as for military Suitable for supply missions.
history
Although the first four Lo / Ro ships were used in the transatlantic service by the US shipping company Moore-McCormick as early as 1969, these were just as unsuccessful as, for example, the sister ships Finn-Amer and Finnsailor, which were commissioned from 1971 , because they were designed for very high speeds at the same time, which quickly made them uneconomical in the wake of the oil crisis . Only in the course of the advancing specialization of shipbuilding were Lo / Ro freighters built again towards the end of the 1970s and have since found their niche in certain regions.
Loading space arrangement
In general, unlike ConRo ships, LoRo ships are designed in all cargo holds for conventional, vertical loading using the LoLo method , as well as for horizontal, i.e. rolling, loading. This further development of the ConRo ship, which has been in existence since the 1960s, is more flexible in terms of loading technology, but is also more complex in terms of construction. It is characterized by access to all cargo holds through hatches and ramps as well as being equipped with an often large number of cargo gear . For this purpose, LoRo ships, like other RoRo or ConRo ships, are provided with trailer and car decks of various heights, which can be reached via stern ramps. Often there are also lifts and side gates to be found. The weather deck, which can often be reached from the ro-ro area via another ramp, can usually also be loaded with trailers and / or containers. With a view to a possible military usability, the individual loading decks are designed, in addition to the high flexibility of the loading space, for sometimes high deck loads.
Examples
The Hamlet-Alice and Lo / Ro 18 series were earlier representatives of this type of ship .
