Loch Coruisk ( Scottish Gaelic Coire Uisg ) is a freshwater lake in the Scottish Highlands . It is located in Minginish in the southwest of the Isle of Skye at the foot of the Black Cuillins in a completely uninhabited area. The lake is not accessed by any road and is considered to be one of the most remote places in Great Britain.

Loch Coruisk has the typical elongated shape of a lake created by glaciers in the Ice Age . It is about 1.5 miles long but only about 400 m wide. The lake is located about 200 m from Loch Scavaig , a sea hole into which it drains via the Scavaig , with a few hundred meters one of the shortest rivers in Great Britain. There are several small islands in Loch Coruisk. The lake is surrounded by a completely treeless and rocky landscape and is a popular destination for hikers. Most choose the approximately eleven-kilometer route from Sligachan , another seven-kilometer hiking route leads from the small village of Elgol on the Strathaird peninsula along the seashore to Loch Coruisk. On this route, however, you have to pass the Bad Step , a rocky slab that slopes steeply into the sea.

The lake can also be reached from Elgol by boat. Crossings to Loch Coruisk can be booked at the small Elgol pier. The crossing takes about 30 minutes and is often used by boat skippers to take a detour to the seal banks in the bay in front of the loch. From the landing stage, an approximately 500 meter long hike over unpaved paths leads directly to the hole, which is said to be one of the 50 most photographed subjects in Great Britain.

As early as the 19th century , Loch Coruisk was a destination for poets and painters during the Romantic era . Visitors included Walter Scott , Sidney Richard Percy and William Turner , among others . Alfred Tennyson, on the other hand, was unable to see Loch Coruisk due to fog.
