Elgol ( Gaelic Ealaghol ) is in the south of Scotland's Atlantic island of Skye located Crofter - and fishing village with about 150 inhabitants (2001). As in most other localities on the Inner Hebridean island in the Scottish Highlands , tourism is now another main source of income for the residents of Elgol .
Origin of name
According to tradition, the name "Elgol" is derived from a battle that Aella, a follower of Vortigern , waged against the Scots and Picts and was called "Aella-gol".
Other stories tell of the fact that the name is derived from a Nordic language and was introduced by the Vikings , especially since names with non-Gaelic origin or background are common in this region of the otherwise Gaelic-speaking Isle of Skye.

Geography and access
Elgol is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean and the mountainside immediately behind it on the Strathaird Peninsula . The mountainous terrain of the Cuillin Hills foothills in the area is mainly characterized by grassy areas. The place is in the southwest part of the Civil parish Strath .
The few residential buildings are along the last three kilometers of the only access road (B8083). The route, which has been developed as a single-track asphalt road, leads from the next larger town of Broadford for around 23 kilometers, past several settlements to Elgol and crosses grazing areas for sheep and cows, which is why the road has several cattle bars .
tourism
Elgol is often a destination for vacationers precisely because of its seclusion. Several hiking routes, for example along the coast, start or end in the village. From Elgols harbor, boat tours to Loch Coruisk are also possible, where wild animals such as seals and dolphins can often be observed.
