Sidney Richard Percy (actually Sidney Richard Percy Williams) (* 1821 in London , † April 13, 1886 in Sutton (Surrey) ) was an English landscape painter .

biography

Sidney Richard Percy Williams was the fifth son of the painter Edward Williams . Although his first pictures were signed "Sidney Williams" , from the age of 20 he used the stage name "Percy" to distinguish it from the many other painting members of his family . From 1842 Percy exhibited his works at the Royal Academy of Arts and other institutions.

Most of Percy's landscapes were created in North Wales , Devon and Yorkshire , as well as in the Lake District and on the Isle of Skye .

After Percy married in 1863, he settled in Buckinghamshire . "Hill House" was the name of the new home from which the painter took forays through the surrounding forest landscapes. He gained great popularity during this period and was able to afford cars and a large number of servants.

In 1865 Percy went on a study trip to Venice and made stops in Switzerland and Paris on the way home . The war of 1866 between the German Confederation under the leadership of Austria and the Kingdom of Prussia put an end to Percy's foreign travel activities. The landscapes of North Wales gave him new inspiration ; so he spent many days in the area around Llanbedr and Arthog , and at the mouth of the Mawddach in Merionethshire .
