Lochboisdale ( Scottish Gaelic Loch Baghasdail ) is the main population center on the island of South Uist , Outer Hebrides , Scotland , with around 1100 inhabitants .

The city benefited from the herring boom in the 19th century, and a wharf for steamers was built in 1880. In 1905 a mission church followed, and by 1953 ferry connections with Oban , Castlebay , Mallaig and Lochmaddy were established .

Lochboisdale is now the ferry terminal for the island of South Uist. The waterfront has undergone changes as the old buildings have either been renovated or demolished for the construction of new residential and commercial buildings. The Lochboisdale Hotel , which was built in the late 19th century, is still located by the ferry terminal . Lochboisdale also has a post office and a police station near the ferry terminal, as well as a church belonging to the Free Church of Scotland .
