François Ferdinand Louis ("Lode") Craeybeckx (born November 24, 1897 in Antwerp , † July 25, 1976 ibid) was a Flemish socialist politician.

Live and act

The son of a police officer initially worked as a journalist for the Volksgazet from 1925 to 1931 . In 1932 he stood for the Belgian Socialist Party (BSP) in local elections and became a member of the Deurne municipal council and a member of the Belgian Chamber of Deputies , of which he was a permanent member until 1968. In the meantime, Craeybeckx was elected mayor of Antwerp on January 1, 1947 as the successor to Camille Huysmans and held this office until his death. With almost 30 years in office, Craeybeckx was the longest serving mayor of Antwerp.

During his tenure, Craeybeckx was jointly responsible for numerous projects that shaped the city, including the expansion of the port of Antwerp into a container port, the structural development of the city, the establishment of the Rijksuniversitair Centrum Antwerp , which was integrated into the new Antwerp University in 2003 , and the establishment of the open-air museum for Sculpture Middelburg. He paid little attention to historical city structures and sacrificed a large part of the houses, some of which were still from the Middle Ages, for these projects.
