Louis or Lodovico Frapolli (born March 26 or 23, 1815 in Milan , † April 25, 1878 in Turin ) was an Italian geologist and politician.

Life

His family originally came from Scareglia in the Swiss canton of Ticino and had settled in Milan.

In 1840 he broke off his military career as an Austrian major and studied geology in Paris. As a civil engineer, he went on study trips to France, Germany and Sweden. In the summer of 1846 he gave a lecture at the Imperial Academy in Berlin on the position of the Neptunian formation and the formation of the earth's crust . Around 1847 he wrote an essay on the storage of secondary seams in the north of the Harz Mountains .

In 1848 he took part in the Italian liberation struggles, the Risorgimento and Roman Republic, for which he was on a mission in Paris. After he was expelled from France in 1849, he applied for asylum in Ticino and obtained Swiss citizenship as a result of his origin. He worked for several liberal newspapers and had close contact with Tipografia Elvetica , which was closed in 1853. He was involved in the construction of the road through the Val Colla, the creation of the cantonal lyceum and was interested in railroad issues.

In 1859 he took part in the war against Austria. From 1860 to 1874 he was a member of the Italian parliament on the side of the radical opposition. He carried out diplomatic and military assignments. In 1866 he met György Klapka in Berlin .

In 1864 he participated as a freemason in the merger of masonic grand lodges to form the Grande Oriente d'Italia . After Grand Master Nigra abdicated, the First Deputy Grand Master Filippo Cordova , who had held this post in 1861, became the new Grand Master. In 1869 Frapollis became Grand Master of the Greater Orient. Under his chairmanship, a congress of 150 lodges met in Florence and agreed on general principles, some of which were sharply anti-clerical. During his tenure he moved the seat of the Greater Orient from Florence to conquered Rome. At the outbreak of the Franco-Prussian War (1870/1871) he hurried to Giuseppe Garibaldi , who was fighting on the French side, and resigned his grandmaster title on September 7, 1870. Until the election of a replacement, Giuseppe Mazzoni was entrusted with the management.

He is said to have committed suicide.
