Logic 5 ( Comp IV in the US ) is an electronic game released by Milton Bradley in 1978 . In Japan it was marketed by Takara Tomy under the name Pythaligoras . The devices are handheld versions of the well-known deduction game Mastermind . The latter was also available in an electronic version.

The sales price of the Logic 5 was 79 DM in 1978. This corresponds to around 111 EUR in 2016.

idea

The device creates an ordered, three to five-digit number combination with the digits 0 to 9, which the player has to guess. Each digit occurs only once in this code.

The input takes place via a numeric keypad, the output via red LEDs on a simple display. This shows how many digits were guessed and how many of them are in the correct place in the code. The handheld was accompanied by an evaluation pad on which the player can take notes.

You can either play cooperatively or against each other. If you want to guess the combination of numbers together, you enter the code so that everyone can see it. If you play against each other, you solve the task undercover, press the "E" key after the correct answer and pass the device on to another player. He has to solve the same code again - either faster or in fewer attempts.

In a test, Chip magazine criticized the need to use an evaluation block. - The mastermind model had small marker pins as a memory aid. It was also criticized that you cannot enter your own code and that the generated code cannot be displayed if you are not able to guess it. The rather large case also received no approval from the editorial staff.

The network independence, the adjustable level of difficulty and the training in logical thinking were regarded as positive.

hardware

The external dimensions are 10.5 × 19 cm with a height of approx. 11 cm. The weight including the 9 V battery is approx. 320 g. The game could also be operated with a power supply, which was not included in the scope of delivery.

The TMS0904 microcontroller used in the Logic 5 is a variant of the Texas Instruments TMS1000 and was used in pocket calculators such as the TI1270 and other electronic games ("Code Name Sector", "Wiz-a-Tron") in the mid-1970s.

Emulators

There was an emulator (freeware) for PDAs and smartphones with Palm OS .
