The Logierait Viaduct is a former railway bridge in the Scottish village of Logierait in the Council Area Perth and Kinross . In 1981 the bridge was included in the Scottish Monument List in the highest monument category A.

history

The viaduct was needed as part of a branch line of the Inverness and Perth Junction Railway to Aberfeldy . The railway company entrusted the Scottish engineer Joseph Mitchell with the planning of the bridge. After construction began in 1861, the bridge was opened on September 9, 1863. The cost of construction was £ 13,772. When the line was closed on May 3, 1965, the Logierait Viaduct became obsolete. The railway tracks have meanwhile been dismantled and the viaduct is now used for public transport.

description

The Logierait Viaduct spans the Tay near the small town of Logierait. With the Ballinluig Viaduct , an almost identical bridge spans around 1.5 km west of the Tummel . The 128 m long truss bridge rests on three paired, cylindrical cast iron pillars , each with a diameter of 2.4 m and a height of 14.9 m. The hollow bodies are filled with quarry and Portland cement to weigh them down . The main openings are 41.8 m wide. To protect the bridge in the event of flooding, two side openings with a width of 12.7 m lead over land on both sides of the bridge.
