Lois Moran
Lois Moran (actually Lois Darlington Dowling ; born March 1, 1909 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , † July 13, 1990 in Sedona , Arizona ) was an American stage and film actress .
Life
Lois Moran was born the only child of Roger and Gladys Evans Dowling. Her father died in a car accident when she was one year old. Her mother then married Dr. Timothy Moran, from whom Lois Moran derived her stage name. When Lois was nine years old, her stepfather died of influenza .
Lois Moran grew up in Pennsylvania until 1921 before emigrating to Paris with her mother . At the age of thirteen she received her first small appearances as a singer and dancer at the Paris Opera , at fourteen she made her first film roles in French productions. Moran was seen in a leading role in the drama The Two Lives of Mathias Pascal in 1925 . After her return to the United States, she became better known that same year for the role of Laurel in The Sacrifice of Stella Dallas .
In the following years Lois Moran was seen as the leading actress in numerous silent films. But like many other actors, she did not make a successful transition from silent to sound films. After a few sound films, Moran ended her film career in 1932 at the age of only 23 and henceforth devoted herself to the theater. Among other things, she appeared on Broadway in musicals such as Of Thee I Sing . In 1974 Moran returned to the big screen for the last time: In Wim Wenders Alice in the Cities she was seen in a small role as an airport employee.
In 1927 Moran had a short-lived relationship with the writer F. Scott Fitzgerald , who is said to have leaned on the character of Rosemary Hoyt in his novel Tenderly the Night . In 1935, Moran married Clarence M. Young, then Assistant Secretary of Commerce, with whom they had a son. The marriage lasted until Young's death in 1973.
Lois Moran died on July 13, 1990 in a nursing home in Sedona of complications from cancer. She was 81 years old. Moran has no gravesite, her ashes were scattered in Red Rock Country, Arizona.
