London Express class is the name of a trio of Panamax - Container motor ships of the Hamburg shipping company Hapag-Lloyd . The London Express class consists of the ships Kobe Express , Düsseldorf Express and London Express , which went into operation in 1997/98.

The series of this ship type built between 1995 and 2000 by the Samsung Heavy Industries shipyard in Koje, South Korea, comprised a total of ten units.

The ships

In 1995/96 four ships were built for the shipping company Neptune Orient Lines .

  • 1995 Neptune Sardonyx (IMO No. 9077458), 2014 demolition in Alang
  • 1995 NOL Seginus (IMO No. 9077460), 2015 demolition in Chittagong
  • 1995 NOL Sheratan (IMO No. 9081203), 2014 demolition in Alang
  • 1996 NOL Spinel (IMO No. 9081215), 2014 demolition in Alang

The actual three ships in the London Express class followed in 1997/98.

  • The first ship in the Hapag-Lloyd series was the Shanghai Express (IMO no. 9143544) with the hull number 1208 , which was handed over in 1997. The ship was laid down on May 28, 1997 and was launched on September 27, 1997. The delivery took place on December 1, 1997. When Hapag-Lloyd received a new Shanghai Express in 2002 , the ship was renamed the Kobe Express and is still in service.
  • The second Hapag-Lloyd ship of the series was the Düsseldorf Express , built in 1998 with hull number 1209 (IMO no. 9143556). She was laid down on August 21, 1997 and launched on November 29, 1997. She was delivered on March 1, 1998. The ship is still sailing under this name.
  • The name of the class and the last Hapag-Lloyd ship in the series was the London Express, delivered in 1998 with hull number 1210 (IMO no. 9143568). After the keel was laid on January 16, 1998, the ship was launched on May 3, 1998 and was delivered on August 12, 1998. The ship is still in service today under this name.

Another three ships of this series were completed for the Saudi Arabian state shipping company National Shipping Company of Saudi Arabia (NSCSA).

  • 1999 Saudi Jeddah (IMO No. 9181651). The ship was laid down on November 2, 1998 and launched on February 13, 1999. It was delivered on June 14, 2000. The ship is now called MSC Ingrid .
  • 1999 Saudi Jubail (IMO No. 9181663). After the keel was laid on December 28, 1998 under construction number 1261, the ship was launched on April 10, 1999 and was delivered on August 13, 1999. It has been called MSC Matilde since 2002 .
  • 2000 Saudi Yanbu (IMO No. 9181675). The ship, built under hull number 1262, was laid down on June 7, 1999, launched on October 1, 1999 and was delivered on January 4, 2000. Since 2002 it has been called MSC Sarah .

The Düsseldorf Express

On October 24-25, 2003, a fatal accident occurred while traveling from Savannah to Norfolk. A ship operations officer was trapped in the scavenge air receiver of the main engine during a control inspection and died after the ship left port despite an unsuccessful search for the ship operations officer.
