The Longtan Dam is on the river Hong Shui He , a tributary of the Pearl River (Pearl River) in the autonomous region of Guangxi the Zhuang in southern China. The building is primarily used to generate electricity, but also to regulate water. Construction began on July 1, 2001 and completion was celebrated in December 2009.
The Longtan Dam is another major project in China alongside the world-famous Three Gorges Project on the Yangtze and the Xiaolangdi Dam on the Yellow River. The dam is 216.5 m currently the highest RCC - (RCC) -Staumauer the world. The use of rolled concrete for such large gravity dams has only developed in the last 20 years or so. This is a very stiff concrete that is poured in layers and compacted with rollers. Despite the mostly higher concrete volume compared to conventional curved wall construction, there are often economic advantages due to lower material and manufacturing costs.
The dam wall is provided with locks through which ships are able to overcome the height difference of 179 m. There is also a ship lift with a lifting height of 68.5 m and trough dimensions of 40 m × 10.8 m × 1.8 m, which can move ships up to 250 t.
The underground hydropower plant is also impressive because of its size. The dimensions of the cavern are: length 388 m, width 28 m, height 74 m. The first electricity was generated in May 2007. The installed power plant capacity is given as 6426 MW and the annual electricity generation is estimated at 18.7 TWh.
The construction work required the relocation of 80,000 people. On the other hand, the reservoir is intended to protect 3.0 million residents and 67,000 hectares of agricultural land from flooding in the future.
