Leopold Trattinnick

Leopold Trattinnick , also Leopold Trattinick (born May 26, 1764 in Klosterneuburg , † January 24, 1849 in Vienna ) was a Habsburg , k. k. Austrian botanist and mycologist . Its official botanical author abbreviation is “ Tratt. "

Life

In 1806 Trattinnick became the regional phytographer of Lower Austria. From 1809 to 1835 he was custodian of the Kk Hof-Naturalienkabinett in Vienna. He published several mycological works and published collections with wax replicas of described types of fungus.

He also became known through several expensive and only in small editions published panel works, most of which were illustrated by the flower painters Franz Reinelli and Ignaz Stremel .

Trattinnick was the baptismal witness of Moritz Bondi (* 1835 Pettau an der Drau, son of the retired educator and owner of a French language school Leopold Bondi and Pauline von Vernay, grandparents of the Graz-based conductors and composers Leopold Stolz and Robert Stolz) named as custos of the Hof-Naturalien-Cabinet in Vienna.

Honors

In 1820 he became a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

The plant genus Trattinnickia from the balsam tree family (Burserceae) was named after him by Carl Ludwig Willdenow .

Name spelling: "Trattinick" or "Trattinnick"

He published his botanical works at least partially under the name "Leopold Trattinick" (with a simple "n"). Also the genus Trattinnickia Willd named after him by Karl Ludwig Willdenow . , introduced by Willdenow with a double "n", was previously written with a single "n" in botanical literature.

Currently, the more accurate spelling “Trattinnick” with a double “n” (again) has prevailed. In the 17th edition of the Zander Concise Dictionary of Plant Names, the spelling “Trattinnick” can be found, and the genus named after him has also changed to the variant with a double “n”.
