The Loper Canal (in Argentina Pasaje Espíritu Santo ) is a 24 km wide strait in the archipelago of the South Shetland Islands . It runs in an east-west orientation and separates Elephant Island in the northeast from Gibbs Island in the southwest.
The stretch of sea between Elephant Island and King George Island was originally named like this. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee limited this designation in 1980 to the sea route described here. The Argentine name is named after the Argentine brig Espíritu Santo , with which the British sealer captain Joseph Herring founded the seal hunt in the Antarctic or south of the 60th parallel on December 25, 1819 in the Hersilia Cove of Rugged Island .
