Lopo Cancela de Abreu

Lopo de Carvalho Cancela de Abreu (born December 15, 1913 in Guarda ; † October 20, 1990 ) was a Portuguese doctor and politician who was Minister of Health and Assistance from 1968 to 1970.

Life

After attending school, Abreu completed a degree in medicine at the University of Lisbon and advanced training in pulmonology at the University of Rome . He then worked as an assistant doctor and later a doctor in the Clinic for Lung Diseases of the Medical Faculty of the University of Lisbon, before becoming professor and director of the National Institute for the Treatment of Tuberculosis IANT (Instituto de Assistência Nacional aos Tuberculosos) , founded in 1953 .

On September 27, 1968 Abreu was appointed Minister of Health and Assistance (Ministro da Saúde e Assistência) by Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano and held this position until August 26, 1970. In 1969 Abreu was elected for the first time as a member of the National Assembly ( Assembleia Nacional ) and represented the constituency of Aveiro in this until the Carnation Revolution on April 25, 1974 . During his parliamentary membership, he was in the tenth legislative period after leaving the government from 1970 to 1973 member of the Committee on Local and General Administration and from 1973 to 1974 Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Relations.

For his services he was awarded the Grand Cross of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique (Ordem do Infante D. Henrique) on February 14, 1970 and on February 11, 1984 the dignity of Commander of the Order of Merit (Ordem do Mérito) .
