Lopus decolor is a species of bug from the family of soft bugs (Miridae).

features

The bugs of this species are 3.8 to 4.8 millimeters long. They have a yellow-grayish base color and an elongated, oval body. The head has two dark spots adjacent to the compound eyes, the tarsi are completely black. The species is similar to Amblytylus nasutus . The males are mostly fully winged (macropter), the females have regressed (brachyptere) hemielytres.

Occurrence and habitat

The species occurs throughout Europe and is only absent in the eastern Mediterranean. It was introduced by humans in North America and New Zealand. In Germany it is widespread and is particularly common in the geest areas in the north, where it can also occur in large numbers . There is only sporadic evidence from Austria, but it is probably widespread.

Grass-rich, dry and warm, semi-shady habitats with sandy soils are populated, for example light pine forests, but also coastal dunes with strong wind exposure.

Way of life

The bugs live on various sweet grasses (Poaceae), in particular on ostrich grasses ( Agrostis ) and wire smut ( Deschampsia flexuosa ). Nymphs and adult bugs mainly suckle on the immature seeds of the grasses, where they are well camouflaged by their color. The adults can be observed from the end of June / beginning of July until August, occasionally also in September. The females pierce their eggs into the cavity in the central part of the stems of their host plants.
