Jesús María Echavarría y Aguirre (born July 6, 1858 in San Pedro Bacubirito , Sinaloa , Mexico , † April 5, 1954 in Saltillo , Coahuila ) was Bishop of Saltillo .

Life

As a student, Jesús María Echavarría y Aguirre learned easily and with pleasure, and soon he was teaching himself. Impressed by his talent, the community of San Pedro Bacubirito made him run the local school at a very young age. But then Echavarría felt the calling to the priesthood. He studied theology and received on 18 October 1886 in the Cathedral of Nuestra Señora del Rosario in Culiacan by the Bishop of Sinaloa , José de Jesús María Uriarte Perez , the sacrament of Holy Orders .

Echavarría taught at the seminary in Culiacan and was pastor in El Fuerte and in Culiacan. As a pastor, a good religious education for children was particularly important to him. In 1895 he was appointed rector of the seminary, in 1902 vicar general of the diocese of Sinaloa .

On December 16, 1904, Pope Pius X appointed him Bishop of Saltillo. The Bishop of Aguascalientes , José María de Jesús Portugal y Serratos OFM , donated him episcopal ordination on February 12, 1905 in the Santiago Cathedral in Saltillo ; Co- consecrators were the Bishop of León , Leopoldo Ruiz y Flóres , and the Coadjutor Bishop of Zamora , José de Jesús Fernández y Barragán . The inauguration took place on March 27 of the same year.

The Diocese of Saltillo then comprised the entire state of Coahuila and extended over 151,000 km 2 . Bishop Echavarría undertook pastoral trips for months in 1907 and 1908 to get to know his vast district. It saw the plight of indigenous families and other poor families. He set about giving their children a school education. To this end, he founded a large number of schools, even in remote hamlets where there were no school buildings. Every “home” served as a place of instruction: hallways, pens, horse stables, etc. All children in need received school meals . As a result, the network of these rural elementary schools became known as "Escuelas hogar" ("Schools and homesteads"). His initiative caught on nationwide.

Since there were only a few priests in his diocese, he founded a diocesan congregation and entrusted the nuns with religious instruction. He strove to raise the level of theological education of the clergy. According to can. In 672 of the Latin American Plenary Council held in Rome in 1899 , he gave each of his priests a monthly task from moral theology ; the priests had to send their solution to the bishop by letter. In his first year as bishop he founded a seminary, which Venustiano Carranza , the governor of Coahuila state, closed.

Tensions between the spokesmen of the Mexican Revolution and the Catholic Church, which had already become apparent with the closure of the seminary, intensified. On April 27, 1914, revolutionary troops occupied the city of Saltillo. Bishop Echavarría had to go into exile. Bishop John William Shaw of San Antonio, Texas accepted him (and other displaced Mexican bishops). In May 1918, Bishop Echavarría was able to return to Saltillo.

Although the conflicts with the revolutionary government persisted and despite some threats, Bishop Echavarría dared to take part in the laying of the foundation stone of the Christ monument on the Cerro del Cubilete near Silao ( Guanajuato state ) on March 12, 1920 . In 1926 he was to be arrested on the orders of President Plutarco Elías Calles ; however, an officer who was well disposed to him enabled him to escape. He had to go into exile again, once more to San Antonio. In 1928 he was able to return home from his second exile.

In 1938, at the age of 80, the Holy See granted his support and appointed Luis Guízar y Barragán as coadjutor. However, Jesús María Echavarría remained Bishop of Saltillo until his death in his 50th year as bishop.

Beatification process

In 1987 the diocesan beatification process was opened. In 2015 he was awarded the honorary title “ Venerable Servant of God ”.
