Leopoldo Ruiz y Flóres

Leopoldo Ruiz y Flóres (born November 13, 1865 in Amealco , Querétaro ; † December 12, 1941 in Morelia , Michoacán ) was one of the Mexican bishops who were commissioned to sign the agreements that led to the armed conflict of the Guerra Cristera in Mexico ended between 1926 and 1929.

Life

At the age of 11 he entered a Josephine College in Mexico City and was sent to Rome in 1881 to the Pontifical Latin American College to study theology at the Gregorian . He received three doctorates, one in philosophy, another in theology, and the third in canon law. After being ordained a priest in Rome in 1888 , he returned to Mexico around 1889.

In 1892 he received the chair of philosophy at the seminary in Mexico City and a pastorate at a church in Tacubaya . On November 12, 1900, he was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of León . He was ordained episcopal on December 27th of the same year by the Archbishop of Mexico, Próspero María Alarcón y Sánchez de la Barquera ; Co- consecrators were Santiago de los Santos Garza Zambrano , Archbishop of Linares o Nueva León , and Francisco Plancarte y Navarrette , Bishop of Cuernavaca .

In 1907 he was appointed Archbishop of Linares (Monterrey) and in 1911 transferred to the Archdiocese of Michoacán . In 1914 he was driven into exile by the country's religious conflicts and lived for some time in Chicago , USA .

In November 1925 Pope Pius XI awarded him . the title of Papal Assistant to the Throne .

In 1929 he became an Apostolic Delegate and signed the agreements with the Mexican state under the direction of Plutarco Elías Calles . He was later exiled again, although in 1938 he was able to celebrate his 50th anniversary as a priest in his archdiocese, which had been called the Archdiocese of Morelia since 1924.
