James Burnett

James Burnett, Lord Monboddo (born October 25, 1714 in Monboddo House , Kincardineshire , Scotland , † May 26, 1799 in Edinburgh ) was a Scottish lawyer , man of letters and amateur naturalist.

Life

James Burnett, Lord Monboddo was a Scottish judge, scholar in language development and philosopher. Today he is valued as the founder of modern comparative historical linguistics (Hobbs, 1992). In 1767 he became a judge on the Court of Session, the Supreme Court of Scotland. Burnett then took on a title relating to his father's property, Monboddo House. Some scholars argue that Monboddo developed the concept of evolution before Darwin (Watt, 1985), (Bailey, 2005), (Cloyd, 1972), (Russell, 1945).
