Lorenz Just (* 1983 Halle an der Saale) is a German scholar of Islam and writer .

life and work

Just moved to East Berlin with his parents in 1988 . He studied Islamic Studies at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . During his studies he traveled through Egypt, Yemen, Syria and Iran; in Lebanon he worked at the Orient Institute in Beirut . From 2011 to 2015 he studied at the German Literature Institute in Leipzig .

In 2017 he released his debut The Evil Man , a collection of loosely interlinked narratives. In his novel Am Rand der Dächer , published in 2020, Just tells of the anarchic childhood in Berlin after the fall of the Wall. He does not follow an adult perspective, but rather child and youthful decision-making patterns and thought structures. Without transfiguration, the mood of a decade of two states is captured, the promise of freedom, the end of illusions and a time without fixed structures.

His debut novel Am Rand der Dächer is set in Berlin in the 1990s.
