Lorenz Petersen (born September 12, 1803 in Flensburg , † May 2, 1870 in Altona ) was a German marine painter.

Lorenz Petersen was born the son of a sailor. From 1830 he worked as a master painter in Altona. He also ran a painting business which u. a. Flags and signs supplied. As a painter he was self-taught . His customers mostly included captains and owners of ships.

Until 1858 Petersen painted his naval pictures alone, from 1858 to 1869 with his half-brother Peter Christian Holm (1823–1888) and signed them with “L. Petersen et al. P. Holm ". It is possible that Peter Christian Holm was only mentioned as a co-owner of the company.

His son Heinrich Andreas Sophus Petersen (1834–1916) also worked as a marine painter and was internationally known. After the death of his father in 1870, he also worked with Peter Christian Holm.
