Lorenz von Ehren tree nursery
The tree nursery Lorenz von Ehren is a traditional tree nursery in Germany and one of the largest in Europe. It was founded in 1865 and has been run as a family business ever since.
history
The von Ehren family came to Blankenese from Tönning before 1673 . Johannes von Ehren (1832–1906), who had completed an apprenticeship as a gardener in the tree nursery of James Booth & Sons in Nienstedten , a suburb of Hamburg, started his own business in 1865 on a site leased by Baron Jenisch , today's Nienstedten market square. Soon after, however, he moved to Kanzleistraße, where the headquarters remained until 1993 (now Westerpark in Klein Flottbek ). Thanks to orders for the parks of Hamburg villa owners, the company grew rapidly and within a few years it was already delivering to the Berlin area and Denmark.
His son, Lorenz von Ehren I (1867–1948), whose name the company bears, took over the business in 1898 after an apprenticeship at the Forsteck nurseries near Kiel, making it one of the most renowned of its time. He was purveyor to the court for England and Denmark, and among other things also supplied trees to the court of the Tsars in St. Petersburg. On the occasion of the horticultural exhibition in Altona in 1914 he was chosen as purveyor to the royal Prussian court. The focus on solitary trees and large trees, for which the company is known today, began back then.
After a collapse in the export business in the First World War and due to reparations and inflation in the years that followed, the tree nursery flourished again from the beginning of the 1920s.
At the beginning of the 1940s, Johannes von Ehren II (1899–1982) and Lorenz von Ehren II (1906–1982) joined the management. During the Second World War, only the most valuable trees could be propagated; soon only fruit and vegetables were allowed to be grown. After the end of the war, trees and plants had to be imported from tree nurseries throughout Europe and the USA in order to restore the diversity of the range.
At the beginning of the 1960s, Lorenz von Ehren III (* 1937) and Bernd von Ehren (* 1938) joined the company as managing directors after completing their tree nursery apprenticeship. After the opening of the Elbe Tunnel in 1975, tree nursery quarters south of the Elbe were also cultivated for the first time. In 1965, a branch company in was Bad Zwischenahn established that on topiary trees ( topiary specializes) and evergreen shrubs solitaire. In 1994, the company headquarters was relocated to Hamburg-Marmstorf on the other side of the Elbe for logistical reasons .
The dispatch center in Hamburg-Marmstorf was an official EXPO 2000 project due to its exemplary ecological construction .
Since 2013, the company has been managed in the fifth generation by Bernhard von Ehren (* 1972). The business of the tree nursery has been the responsibility of Bernd von Ehren's son since 2005, and he has been the company's managing partner since 2013. Since 2007 he has been supported by the company's second managing director, Konrad Parloh.
In 2013, another branch was founded in Rellingen (Schleswig-Holstein).
Awards
Lorenz von Ehren III received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2000 for his services. From 1969 he was chairman of the Hamburg regional association in the Bund deutscher Baumschulen eV (BdB), from 1986 to 1990 chairman of the recognition committee of the BdB at federal level and from 1989 to 1993 president of the BdB. He also initiated the founding of a European tree nursery interest group and was president of the European Nurserystock Association (ENA) for four years. After reunification, he brought together the tree nursery associations from East and West Germany. Lorenz von Ehren III is today one of the honorary presidents of the BdB for the Hamburg regional association.
Nursery
At its three locations, Hamburg (headquarters), Bad Zwischenahn and Rellingen, the company employs around 180 people and cultivates around 600 hectares. The range includes more than 500,000 trees. As a full-range supplier, the nursery has over 2,000 genera, species and varieties on offer. Including avenue trees with trunk circumferences of 14 to 16 cm up to solitary trees with approx. 140 cm trunk circumference (e.g. about ten tons), conifers, rhododendrons, evergreens, solitary shrubs, fruit trees full of character, topiary trees and solitary and multi-stemmed shrubs. The main export countries include a. Scandinavia, Great Britain, France, the Alpine countries, Russia and other Eastern European countries.
The nursery is divided into the two divisions of sales (Lorenz von Ehren GmbH & Co. KG, Hamburg) and production (Lorenz von Ehren mbH & Co. KG production company, main plant in Hamburg, branches in Bad Zwischenahn and Rellingen). The general partner is the management company Acer von Ehren mbH, Hamburg.
The tree nursery is managed by Bernhard von Ehren and Konrad Parloh.
