Lorenzo Costa il Giovane

Lorenzo Costa (* 1537 in Mantua ; † September 29, 1583 ibid) was an Italian Renaissance painter who worked mainly in Rome and Mantua, his hometown. To distinguish him from his grandfather, he was called Lorenzo il Giovane .

biography

Mantua's death registers show that he died in 1583 at the age of 46. Therefore the year of birth is assumed to be 1537. He belonged to a painting dynasty and was the grandson of Lorenzo Costa and son of Girolamo, or rather Ippolito Costa, from whom he learned the trade. Some early works are documented in Mantua, but he was in Rome as early as 1561, where he stayed until 1564. There he worked under Federico Zuccari on various projects, such as B. the decoration of the Borgia Tower, the Tribunale della Ruota , the Belvedere and Casino of Pius IV. In 1564, a series of portraits of the Pope was made by order of the noble Alfonso Gonzaga de Novellara. There are no documents for years from 1564 to 1569, but it is most likely that he returned from Rome and worked for the Gonzaga court. It was not until 1569 payments are documented when he with the architect Giovanni Battista Bertani in the recently by Duke Guglielmo Gonzaga founded Santa Barbara worked.

Like his grandfather, he worked for the Gonzaga family . His work on the decorations of the Corte Nuova and the Corte Vecchia of the Ducal Palace of Mantua (1569–1581) and other rooms is documented, although most of his work is no longer known. The ceiling fresco in the Sala dello Zodiaco from 1579 comes from him and the fresco building the Porta Pradella in the Salone di Manto of the "Appartamento Grande di Castello" was assigned to him. His style was completely mannerist thanks to his years at the papal court, where he studied the work of Federico and Taddeo Zuccari and that of Federico Barocci .

He died in Mantua on September 29, 1583 and was buried in the church of Santa Mostiola in Revere .
