Lorenzo di Mariano
Lorenzo di Mariano Fucci , called il Marrina , (* 1476 in Siena ; † 1534 ibid) was an Italian sculptor .
biography
He was a student of Giovanni di Stefano and from 1506 master builder of his hometown. In 1507 he worked at the Piccolomini Chapel in San Francesco , for which he created the marble ornamentation for the altar and the floor. He later created another altar in the same church.
Many of his works are also in Siena, including the main altar of the church of Santa Maria in Portico a Fontegiusta (1509–1517), the Marsili altar in San Martino (1522) and the facade of the Piccolomini library on the cathedral of Siena
He was loved for his virtuosity in handling marble, was influenced by classical art, but rarely devoted himself to round sculpture: the only known work of this genre is a bust of St. Catherine of Siena (1517) in polychrome terracotta , which is in the church the Contrada del Drago is kept in Siena.
