Giovanni di Stefano (sculptor)
Giovanni di Stefano (* 1444 in Siena ; † approx. 1506) was an Italian sculptor.
biography
He was the son of the painter Stefano di Giovanni, called Sassetta . He was mainly active as a sculptor and created many works in Siena, such as the marble wolves in front of the Cathedral of Siena and the Porta Romana and in the cathedral the inlay of Hermes Trismegistus and the Sibyls of Cumae and Delphi (1487) on the floor as well as the marble statue of St. Ansanus in the chapel of St. John the Baptist (1487) and two angels with bronze candlesticks (1496–1497) on the main altar.
As an “artist of the weak temperament”, he was particularly inspired by Francesco di Giorgio and Vecchietta .
