Loreto Chapel in Türkheim

The Loreto Chapel is a small Roman Catholic hall church in Türkheim in the Swabian district of Unterallgäu . The Loreto Chapel, together with the Church of the Immaculate Conception , is a listed building.

history

The Loreto Chapel is a replica of the house of the Holy Family ( Casa Santa ) in Loreto . In 1683 the chapel was built on the instructions of Duke Maximilian Philipp of Bavaria , by the master builder Johann Schmutzer , and made it a court chapel. The chapel quickly developed into a place of pilgrimage, as a replica of the miraculous image of the original chapel in Loreto was placed on the altar. On April 4, 1684, auxiliary bishop Eustachius Egolf von Westernach inaugurated the chapel. The adjacent Capuchin monastery and the Church of the Immaculate Conception were built later. The foundation stone for the monastery was laid on October 23, 1685, for the church on November 21, 1685. The interior of the chapel was redesigned several times, for example Paul Gedler from Türkheim carried out carpentry and sculpture work for the chapel around 1760. The chapel was given its current appearance in 1954 during a renovation. Previous restorations and renovations took place in 1830, 1878 and 1933.

Architecture and interior design

Image of grace with Our Lady, 17th century

The light in the Loreto Chapel is dim, as only small windows illuminate the room. The length dimensions correspond to the original dimensions of 9.25 × 4.1 m, with a height of 5 m. On the east side at the top is the angel window. According to legend, the Archangel Gabriel entered the room through him and announced the message. Above the altar is the miraculous image in a niche , a figure of Our Lady from the 17th century, with a crown and surrounded by a halo. Three centuries have colored the face of Our Lady black. The ducal donor couple kneel above the miraculous image and above them the Capuchin Father Marcus d'Aviano, who preached at the invitation of the Duke in Türkheim. A monstrance stands on the altar for the perpetual adoration of the Holy of Holies . The monstrance stands in the middle of four panels. They are carved from silver and show scenes from the life of the Holy Family: the angel of the Annunciation appears . The midday meal . The baby Jesus helps with the work . Joseph dies.

Several sheet metal votive pictures are placed in the chapel, among other things with the designation 31 Aug. 1872. This shows a farm with a burning side pavilion, above the miraculous picture. Another votive image made of sheet metal dates from around 1870. It probably shows a mill with burning outbuildings and the miraculous image. A building inscription above the modern entrance door refers to the building dates with 1683, 1684 and 1954.
