Lothar Hensel (born September 14, 1961 in Dormagen ) is a German bandoneon player , composer and arranger .

life and work

Lothar Hensel grew up in Dormagen and studied at the University of the Arts Berlin school music with a major in clarinet . During his studies he started playing the bandoneon. In 1990 he went to Buenos Aires , Argentina , to perfect his game with teachers Arturo Penón and Nestor Marconi . In Paris he also took lessons from Juan José Mosalini , one of the most famous tango soloists of Tango Nuevo .

As a bandoneonist, Lothar Hensel worked with renowned orchestras, e.g. B. with the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin and well-known soloists such as the guitarist Quique Sinesi . His musical interest is particularly in the compositions of Astor Piazzolla , which he recorded on CD in original versions and in his own arrangements .

As a composer he wrote operas, chamber and orchestral music. In it he tries above all to combine South American tango elements with classical European chamber music. In 2001, Lothar Hensel wrote the chamber opera A Last Tango for Margot H. as a commission for the Mecklenburg State Theater in Schwerin . In 2007, his opera Pamina Lives was premiered at the Central Saxon Theater . He also wrote the libretto for this work . In the same year, his second concert for bandoneon and large orchestra with the State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate premiered, which was broadcast live by DeutschlandRadio .

Lothar Hensel performs chamber music and solo with his quartet tango fusión , which consists of a bandoneon , violin, cello and double bass. He also gives concerts with his tango orchestra Septísimo Tango . He has lived in Berlin-Friedrichshagen with his wife and daughter since the 2000s . He was also a teacher for music and German at the Gebrüder-Montgolfier Gymnasium in the Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin until the end of the 2019/20 school year .
