Lothar Matthes (born July 23, 1947 in Kragen ) is a former successful German diver who competed for the GDR .

Athletic career

His sporting career began in 1962. When he attended the children's and youth sport school (KJS) in Chemnitz , he achieved sporting success at the district and state level. In 1965 Lothar Matthes moved to Dresden for SC Einheit Dresden . Here, in collaboration with his trainer, his brother Hans Matthes, the cornerstone of numerous successes in diving was laid. A specialization in diving from the 10 m tower took place early on .

His sporting successes were:

    • 3rd place at the GDR championships in high diving (10 m)
  • 1966
    • 1st place at the GDR championships in high diving (10 m)
  • 1967
    • 2nd place at the GDR championships in artificial jumping (3 m) and 3rd place in artificial jumping (1 m)
    • 2nd place in the European Cup ( Helsinki ) in diving (10 m)
  • 1968
    • 1st place at the GDR championships in artificial jumping (3 m) and in diving (10 m)
    • 6th place at the Summer Olympics in Mexico City in high diving (10 m) with 141.75 points
  • 1969
    • 1st place at the GDR championships in high diving (10 m)
  • 1970
    • 2nd place at the GDR championships in artificial jumping (3 m) and 3rd place in high diving (10 m)
    • 1st place at the European Championships in Barcelona in high diving (10 m) with 454.75 points
  • 1971
    • 1st place at the GDR championships in high diving (10 m)
  • 1972
    • 1st place at the GDR championships in high diving (10 m)
    • 4th place at the Olympic Summer Games in Munich in high diving (10 m) with 456.75 points

Private

In 1973 he ended his sports career. Today he lives in retirement in Dresden, is married and has three children.
