Lothar R. Schmidt

Lothar Richard Schmidt (born June 9, 1936 in Neunkirchen (Saar) ) is a German psychologist. He was full professor for clinical psychology and health psychology at the University of Trier and researcher in the two fields of clinical psychology and health psychology.

Lothar R. Schmidt studied psychology at the Saarland University in Saarbrücken from 1959 to 1963 . In 1963 he obtained his diploma , in 1967 he received his doctorate. From 1964 to 1970 he was a research assistant at this university.

Schmidt worked from 1970 to 1971 as Research Assistant Professor at the University of Illinois with Raymond B. Cattell . During this time he dealt with the concept of objective tests, which was reflected in the co-publication of an objective test battery (OA-TB) and some application studies.

From 1972 to 1980 he was Professor of Medical Psychology at the Saarland University Medical Center in Homburg, from 1980 until his retirement in 2001 he was Professor of Clinical Psychology and Health Psychology at the University of Trier , where he actively participated in the development of the University and the Department of Psychology.

In particular, health psychology and its interconnection with clinical psychology was a scientific and political focus of his work during this time. He is co-author of several textbooks and co-editor of several specialist journals.

In 1974 he was the first editor of the newly founded journal Medical Psychology . In 1979 he actively contributed to the establishment of the German Society for Medical Psychology and was chairman of the founding board until 1981.
