Lou Jiwei

Lóu Jìwěi ( Chinese  楼 继伟 ) (born December 1950 in Beijing ) is a Chinese politician and finance minister in the cabinet of Prime Minister Li Keqiang since 2013. Previously, the distinguished financial expert was a Vice-Secretary General of the State Council of the People's Republic of China and Chairman and CEO of the China Investment Corporation , one of the largest sovereign wealth funds in the world.

Lou Jiwei studied computer science at Tsinghua University and, after working in business and as a soldier in the South China Navy, completed the postgraduate course in econometrics at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences from 1982 to 1984 . Lou is considered the protégé of Zhu Rongji .

Career

In 1973 he joined the Communist Party .

After completing his studies in 1984, he worked as deputy head of the Finance and Banking Bureau of the General Bureau of the State Council and Director of the Institute of Finance and Commercial Economics of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences. From 1992, he was the deputy director of the Beijing City Economic Reform Bureau and director of the State Commission for Economic Restructuring. In 1995 he was appointed Vice Governor of Guizhou Province and in 1998 Vice Minister of the Ministry of Finance.

In March 2007 he was appointed Vice Secretary General of the State Council of the People's Republic of China . In this role he prepared the establishment of a state agency to manage the Chinese foreign exchange reserves . The fund , founded under the name China Investment Corporation, is one of the largest in the world with a volume of around 409.6 billion US dollars (2011).
