Life

Lowery photographed the operations of marines in the Pacific during the war and later published these pictures in magazines such as Leatherneck Magazine . He took part in the Battle of Saipan , the Battle of Tinian , the Battle of Guam and the Battle of Peleliu before he took part in the Battle of Iwojima as Staff Sergeant in February 1945 . On February 23, he photographed a group of Marines from the 5th Marine Division hoisting an American flag on the Suribachi volcano . However, this flag was replaced by a new flag a little later. This second hoist was photographed by photographer Joe Rosenthal and became world famous under the title Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima . Lowery's recordings didn't get that popularity. He then took part in the Battle of Okinawa and later co-founded and president of the Marine Corps Combat Correspondents Association and head of the photography division of Leatherneck Magazine . The magazine dedicated the Louis R. Lowery Award to him. Most recently he held the rank of captain .

He died in 1987, leaving behind a wife and two children. He was buried in the Quantico National Cemetery. His role in hoisting the flag on Iwojima is shown in the film Flags of Our Fathers .
