Loughgall ([ lɒxˈɡɔːl ]; Irish Loch gCál [ ɫɔx gɑːɫ ], "Lake of Cabbage") is a small village , townland (0.53 km²) and civil parish in the baronies of Armagh and Oneilland West in historic Armagh County in Northern Ireland . It has been in the District of Armagh, Banbridge and Craigavon since the 2015 administrative reform . 2011 lived in the place 282 inhabitants in 116 households.

Loughgall was named after a small lake nearby. The village is located in the middle of orchards in an apple growing area. In the village is Loughgall Manor , an imposing manor, the former seat of the Cope family, who acquired land during the Ulster plantation in the 17th century. Loughgall Manor is home to the Northern Irish Horticulture and Plant Breeding Station .

history

On September 21, 1795 there was a skirmish between the Catholic Defenders and the ultimately victorious Protestant Peep O'Day Boys , which was named after a street crossing Battle of the Diamond ( Cath na Cearnóige ). This immediately led to the establishment of the Orange Order in Loughgall.

On May 8, 1987, eight members of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA) carried out an attack on the base of the Royal Ulster Constabulary . The incident is known as the Loughgall attack .

Loughgall is home to Loughgall Football Club , which plays in the NIFL Championship .

The civil parish Loughgall consists of the villages Annaghmore ( Eanach Mór ), Charlemont ( Achadh an Dá Chora ) and Loughgall.
