Cler as a player

Louis Cler (until 1932 under the name Louis Clerc , born December 30, 1905 in Saint-Raphaël , † December 1950 ) was a French football player .

Career

The midfielder , who was nicknamed Petit Cler (little Cler) due to his small size of 164 centimeters , was in the squad of the southern French club AS Cannes from 1927 . At that time he played as an amateur and was a full-time locksmith, as which he ran his own business in the 1930s. With Cannes he was successful in the national cup competition Coupe de France towards the end of the 1920s and made it to the final in 1932. In the final he led his team against Olympique Marseille as captain on the field and scored the only goal in the 83rd minute; so he managed his only title win at national level.

In the same year, Division 1 was introduced as the top national league and at the same time founded professional football in France. With Cannes he entered the then two-pronged league and made his debut on September 11, 1932 in a 5-5 draw in the opening game against SC Fives . The player played in all 18 games of the preliminary round and moved into the final of the championship with the team, but failed there with a 3: 4 at Olympique Lille . In the following seasons Cler kept his regular place, but could not repeat the successes of previous years with the team. In the course of the 1937/38 season, he lost his undisputed role and played only 13 of 30 games.

In 1938, the player said goodbye to Cannes after ten years and moved to neighboring league rivals FC Antibes . With Antibes he denied his last first division year and had to accept relegation at the end of the 1938/39 season. Due to the beginning of the Second World War , he had to retire from football in the same year after 164 first division matches with eleven goals and was called into the French army. As a soldier he became a German prisoner of war and died in 1950 of the effects of an illness that he contracted there.
