He earned laurels in the siege of Barcelona and the siege of Saragossa, but suffered a defeat in 1813 in the siege of the city of San Sebastián he defended → Siege of San Sebastián . Nevertheless, this action was admired not only by the French, but even by the English and Spanish. The emperor was so impressed by the performance of Général Rey that he made him governor of the fortress of Valenciennes in 1815 . A city that was known to be the focus of the combined efforts of the Allies. It was thanks to his resilience, his demonstrated fighting spirit and his experience that he was able to repel the persistent attacks of the coalition troops for so long with the weak means at his disposal. This stubborn resistance meant that the city could stay with France. After doing this great service to his country, he said goodbye and retired to his lands.
