Louis John Steele (born January 30, 1842 in Reigate , England , † December 12, 1918 in Auckland ) was an Anglo-New Zealand painter and engraver .

Life

Steele studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts . In 1871 he returned to England. In the Royal Academy of Arts there were exhibitions of his paintings and engravings. Around 1886 he emigrated to New Zealand without his family and settled in Auckland. He specialized in portraits, the representation of racehorses and historical scenes; the latter often in large formats, on which other painters collaborated.
