Louis Laurie
Louis Laurie (* 19 November 1917 in Cleveland , Ohio , USA ; † 26. December 2002 in Beachwood , Ohio) was an American boxer in the flyweight .
Amateur career
The son of an Italian father and a Slovak mother won the bronze medal at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 and was the first boxer to be awarded the Val Barker Cup as “best technician”.
Professional career
In 1937 Laurie began a half-hearted professional career. He lost his debut fight on April 23 of that year against his compatriot Joey Wells over 6 rounds by unanimous decision of the judges, but won the direct rematch on the 25th of the following month over 6 rounds by unanimous decision. His last stand was on September 16, 1940 against Harold 'Snooks' Lacey in the New Haven Arena , which Laurie lost on points.
Laurie never boxed for a title. His match record was 28 fights, 16 wins, 1 draw out of 11 losses.
Private
When Laurie died in 2002, he left behind a son. He died at the age of 85 at the Nursing and Healthcare Center in Beachwood, Ohio.
