Louis Payette
Louis Payette (born December 25, 1854 in Montreal , † March 19, 1932 ibid) was a Canadian politician and building contractor . From 1908 to 1910 he was mayor of Montreal.
Payette received a commercial training from the Academy of Brothers of Christian Schools . He spent a few years in the United States to deepen his knowledge of construction and worked there in railroad construction. Back in Montreal, he worked as a site manager for twelve years before taking over the Compagnie Labelle-Payette , his father's construction company. It was involved in the construction of numerous important buildings, for example the Château Frontenac in Québec .
In 1902 Payette was elected to the Montreal City Council and in 1906 and 1907 he presided over the Finance Commission. In 1908 he was elected mayor. During his two-year tenure, a committee of inquiry published its final report on the widespread corruption in the city administration. Payette tried to implement measures recommended by the committee, but largely failed due to political opposition.
