Hormidas Laporte (born November 7, 1850 in Lachine , Province of Canada , † February 20, 1934 in Montreal ) was a Canadian politician . From 1904 to 1906 he was mayor of Montreal.

biography

At the age of 17, Laporte started working in a nail factory, and in the evenings he studied with the help of a tutor. In 1870 he opened a grocery store after having acquired the necessary skills within six months. In 1881 he founded Laporte, Martin & Cie. , a food wholesaler . Despite a fire and flood, the company was successful and Laporte became wealthy. From 1894 to 1896 he presided over the Montreal Chamber of Commerce. From 1892 to 1902 he was President of the Alliance Nationale , which developed into a major insurance company.

Laporte was elected to the Montreal City Council in 1896 and chaired the Finance Commission a year later. He wanted to curb the growth in public spending and fight patronage and corruption . In 1904 he successfully ran for mayor. During his tenure, he brought the gas supply under city control, which he failed to do with the trams and the electricity supply . Laporte withdrew from politics and headed the Banque provinciale du Canada from 1907 until his death . He received an honorary doctorate from McGill University .
