Louis Stüting
Louis Stüting (born December 21, 1844 in Elberfeld (today a district of Wuppertal ), † November 4, 1921 in Barmen ) was a German court photographer.
Childhood and later education
Stüting was the son of the decorative painter Johan Karl Stüting. Since his mother died in childbirth, the father gave him to the Elberfeld poor house . Stüting stayed there until he was 13 and moved to the new orphanage on the Arrenberg in 1854. In 1857 he began an apprenticeship as a photographer with the sculptor, drawing teacher and photographer Eduard Liesegang .
Professional background
In 1861 Stüting was poached by the photographer Hühnerjäger from Groningen and in the following year Stüting went to Prof. Egenberger in Amsterdam . In 1865, Stüting began to set up his own business with photographs of Elberfeld citizens. In 1866 he set up a permanent studio in the rear building at Berliner Str. 124 (today: Hardtufer / Hünefeldstrasse).
In 1867 Stüting was entrusted with work for the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm : Stüting photographed the Prussian Guard Band under the direction of Kapellmeister Wilhelm Wieprecht . Shortly afterwards, Prince Karl Anton von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen commissioned him to take photographs and appointed Stüting to be his court photographer with effect from January 1, 1868.
This allowed Stüting to marry Lydia Boecker, called Lyddi, on December 21, 1868. The couple first moved to Düsseldorf and later to Mainz , but came back to Elberfeld in 1874 . Stüting rented his in-laws' house at Berliner Strasse 78. In 1879, Stüting and his family moved to Barmen on Winklerstrasse, where he died on November 4, 1921. He was the father of the future garden architect Arthur Stüting .
meaning
The outstanding position of Stüting lies in the fact that his photographs, which were published in large-format splendid volumes and later reprinted by postcard publishers, are among the oldest images of Elberfeld and Barmen drawn by name.
