Louis Varney (composer)
Louis Varney (born May 30, 1844 in New Orleans , † August 20, 1908 in Paris ) was a French composer.
The son of the composer and conductor Adolphe Varney became conductor at the Theater L'Athénée-Comique after the Franco-Prussian War , for which he also composed several revues (including De bric et de broc ).
Louis Cantin , director of the Théâtre des Bouffes-Parisiens , commissioned him to compose a libretto that Paul Ferrier and Jules Prével had written based on the vaudeville L'habit ne fait pas le moine . The premiere of the operetta Les Mousquetaires au couvent in March 1880 was a triumphant success, with which Varney established himself as an operetta composer in Paris.
Varney composed around forty operettas, including extremely successful works such as Fanfan la Tulipe (1882), Babolin (1885), Les Petits Mousquetaires (1885), La falote (1896), Le papa de Francine (1896) and L'âge d'or . He also composed several ballet pantomimes (including Princesse Idéa , 1895).
