Louis of Planta

Louis von Planta (born March 15, 1917 in Zurich , citizen of Susch and Basel , † August 19, 2003 in Basel) was a Swiss manager.

Life

Ludwig Fortunat von Planta grew up in Basel . He was the son of Fortunat Otto and Christina Marguerite von Planta-Riggenbach. Von Planta is a well-known noble family that comes from Graubünden . Louis von Planta attended high school on Münsterplatz in Basel. He then completed a law degree at the University of Basel . He received his doctorate in 1939. He passed the bar exam and entered a Basel law firm and notary's office. There he became a partner and worked as a lawyer from 1946 to 1967. The decisive step for his further career was his election to the board of directors of JR Geigy AG in Basel in 1965 . Just three years later he took over the presidency of Geigy AG from Carl Koechlin, a major company in dye and agricultural chemistry. Together with Samuel Koechlin , the managing director of Geigy AG, they merged with the previous competitor Ciba AG in 1970 . After a short transition period, von Planta became Chairman of the Board of Directors of the newly formed Ciba-Geigy AG in 1972. He accompanied the laborious integration of the two predecessor companies and prepared the subsequent merger with Sandoz to form Novartis AG .
