Dorothee Bär in front of the sculpture, 2019

The lettering reads on one side as Love, on the other hand as Hate. The ambigram was deliberately chosen to indicate the ambivalence of love and hate in the modern world. The main idea of the artist is to stand up for the preservation of the European ... and to "reverse the ubiquitous hatred in the world in love".

Mia Florentine Weiss went public with the sculpture in 2015 on the occasion of her solo exhibition by installing it as a permanent public work of art in front of the Senckenberg Museum . The construction was supported by the von Metzler family, who are one of the artist's patrons. In 2018 the same work was set up several months before the Siegestor in Munich. This action took place as part of the Faust Festival and the solo exhibition at Hubert Burda Media, which was taking place at the same time . The occasion was the commemorative year “100 years of the end of the First World War”. According to the Süddeutsche Zeitung , the sculpture quickly became an Instagram hit and a tourist magnet. In the same year the Mönchehaus Museum Goslar published an edition with a reduced version of Love / Hate. Mia Florentine Weiss also sees the sculpture as a message for democracy and humanism in order to strengthen the European idea according to the self-chosen maxim “Make Love Not Hate”. In order to carry this thought out into the world, the sculpture was set up in different places in different European cities on the occasion of the European election year 2019, e.g. B. in front of the Brandenburg Gate or the Bavarian National Museum . This was accompanied by happenings, performances and speeches by cultural workers, such as B. Thomas Girst , the museum director Paul Spies , the minister Dorothee Bär or the singer Madeleina Kay . During the German presidency of the Council of the European Union in 2020 , her "Love Hate" sculpture was placed in front of the European Parliament as part of her #fromBrusselswithLove project in Berlin, Prague and also in Brussels, as reported on the topics of the day on the occasion of Angela Merkel's speech on taking over the presidency . The artistic concern is to refer to the importance of peace and the need for love in a time of political division and hatred. The performance takes place with the support of the Federal Foreign Office and the Berlin Senate Chancellery .

reception

“'Hate is partial, but love is even more so.' Weiss' sculpture is in the middle of the Munich cityscape, close to the Academy of Fine Arts, an enrichment with a gain in knowledge. "

- Thomas Girst , Head of Cultural Engagement, BMW Group

“I don't do this to bring a spectacular object in front of my house […] I immediately agreed at short notice to set up the love hate sculpture because it symbolizes strong feelings. And last but not least, they go well with a visit to the museum. It can be understood as a compulsory exercise or completely enchanted. It can arouse astonishment but also frustration or even defenses and hatred. "

- Frank Matthias Kammel , General Director of the Bavarian National Museum
