Lowell Edwin Jones (* 1945 in Britton , South Dakota) is an American mathematician who studies topology and differential geometry.

Jones received his PhD from Yale University in 1970 with Wu-Chung Hsiang (A converse of a fixed point theorem of PA Smith ). He then became a professor at the State University of New York at Stony Brook , where he has been since 1975.

He worked a lot with F. Thomas Farrell , for example in the proof of special cases of the Borel conjecture, in Anosov diffeomorphisms and in establishing the Farrell-Jones conjectures in the algebraic K-theory.

In 1990 he was an invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Kyoto ( Rigidity in Geometry and Topology with F. Thomas Farrell).

In 1973/74 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study .
