Luís Gonçalves das Chagas
Luís Gonçalves das Chagas, Baron von Candiota (* around 1815 in Rio Grande do Sul , † June 13, 1894 in Porto Alegre ) was a Brazilian landowner , nobleman and military .
Chagas was the largest landowner in Rio Grande do Sul , the southernmost state in Brazil , with estancias in the parishes of São Gabriel , Santa Maria and Bagé . In total, he owned 500,000 hectares (2% of the total area of Rio Grande do Sul).
He fought during the Farrapen Revolution (1835-1845) on the side of the Riograndens Republic and took part in the Battle of Seival (in what is now the municipality of Candiota ). In 1865 he set up a cavalry regiment for Emperor Peter II in the Brazilian Empire on the occasion of the Triple Alliance War (1864-1870). For this he was appointed Freiherr von Candiota ( Barão de Candiota ).
