Luis de Sousa

Luis de Sousa (* around 1555 in Santarem ; † May 5, 1632 in Benfica , Lisbon ; actually Manoel de Sousa Coutinho ) was an important Portuguese historian and writer .

Life

Luis de Sousa was born as Manoel de Sousa Coutinho. His father was Lopo de Sousa Coutinho, his mother Dona Maria de Noronha. He studied law in Coimbra . As a young man he traveled to Asia and was a novice of the Order of Malta for a short time (1576). He was also a prisoner of war in North Africa .

In 1583 he married Dona Madalena de Vilhena, widow of an important hero of the battle of Alcácer-Quibir .

From 1590 the family lived in Almada , where he held various state offices from 1599.

When the only daughter died, the couple entered the Sao Domingos de Benfica monastery, a Dominican monastery. There he was given the name Luis de Sousa.

De Sousa died in Lisbon in 1632.

The playwright Almeida Garrett wrote a play about Luis de Sousa in 1843 , which is generally considered to be one of the most important plays in the history of Portugal and also one of the most important of European Romanticism .
